The Faculty of Human Kinetics at the University of Windsor offers bachelors, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Sport Management and Leadership. Our master’s program in Sport Management and Leadership has been consistently ranked best in Canada and among the top 25 in the world by SportBusiness for the past decade.

Our research active faculty are award-winning instructors and mentors who work closely with individual students to guide them to careers in the sport industry that best suits their interests and goals. We have smaller class sizes which allow for more personal attention and stronger relationships to be built between our faculty, staff, and students.

Undergraduate students will benefit from our Kin-One mentorship program, and will get the chance to be involved in our HK Student Society. All students will have opportunities to get involved in paid or volunteer positions with our Windsor Lancers varsity athletics or recreational/intramural programs as well.

Whether you are looking for an opportunity to attend a sporting event or work in the field of recreational, amateur, or professional sport, opportunities abound. As Canada’s southernmost city, Windsor borders Detroit, Michigan, and the University of Windsor is located at the base of the Ambassador Bridge which connects Canada and the United States. Detroit is home to nearly every major professional sport team (NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB) and Windsor’s location puts it equal distance from other major North American cities including Toronto, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Columbus which are all within a 4-hour radius.

The Sport Management and Leadership program at the University of Windsor has created strong relationships with major Canadian sport organizations such as the Canadian Olympic Committee, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), Senators Sport and Entertainment, and the Windsor Spitfires (Canadian Hockey League). Undergraduate students can apply into our co-op program after first year, receive credit for an undergraduate thesis under the supervision of one of our faculty, and/or complete an internship at either the undergraduate or graduate level to gain hands-on experience working in the field.

We want your future to be made in Windsor.

Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology - Campus

The Ph.D. program in Kinesiology has a community ‐ based focus recognized as ensuring the wellbeing of both individuals and the collective at the local, national, and international levels. Graduates will be prepared to provide the resources necessary to sustain the community and will be able to supply current and/or novel ideas and knowledge. This community ‐ based focus in a Kinesiology program is not represented in any other existing program in Canada. Students will be required to complete four courses, one of which is a community ‐ based internship. The internship will encourage the integration of our students into ongoing community initiatives, enhance responsibility for meeting the needs of others while improving overall well ‐ being of Canadians, and encourage students to utilize previously acquired skills, while gaining new abilities, appropriate to their internship setting.

Master of Sport Management and Leadership - Campus

The Master of Sport Management and Leadership (MSML) focuses on the understanding and application of theory to organizational principles and promising practices in the sport industry. Students pursue course work and either a thesis or internship that examines the basic and applied principles of leadership, organizational behaviour, sport marketing, Olympic studies, strategic management, and historical and sociological perspectives of sport.

The MSML program at the University of Windsor is consistently ranked as one of the top programs in North America and in 2023 was ranked #1 in Canada and #15 in the world among Sport Management graduate programs in the SportBusiness Postgraduate Rankings. Most students receive graduate teaching assistantships, and many win graduate research or mentorship awards. Long-standing relationships with major Canadian sport organizations such as the Canadian Olympic Committee, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), Senators Sport and Entertainment, and the Windsor Spitfires (Canadian Hockey League), among others, and a vast alumni base, provide students with ample industry connections to learn from and build their networks. With a low student to professor ratio, MSML candidates are given the attention, guidance, and mentorship they need to meet their career goals.

Honours Bachelor of Sport Management and Leadership - Campus

The Honours Bachelor of Sport Management and Leadership degree is one of only a handful in Canada that gives students the opportunity to directly enter a Sport Management and Leadership program out of high school. The program prides itself on providing students with a wide range of skills, experiential opportunities, and theoretical and practical knowledge.

Our program’s distinct scholarship includes a typical management-based curriculum that incorporates a range of sociocultural courses that contextualize management in a broader and more diverse framework. In the core years, students will have the opportunity to take courses that include principles of sport management, the sport industry, sport leadership, and sport communication, in addition to courses that expose them to the history of physical activity and sport, ethics, and health and wellness. In addition to a host of management and leadership options, in their senior year, students can complete a 6-credit undergraduate thesis. Finally, students can apply into a well-established co-op program after first year or enroll in internship courses for both credit and valuable work experiences.

The family atmosphere of the Faculty of Human Kinetics allows students to make strong and life-long connections with professors, staff, and other students. Moreover, the HK Building, including classrooms and offices, is attached to the Toldo Lancer Centre, a newly constructed athletics and recreational complex that allows several opportunities for volunteer or paid work experiences with one of our many varsity athletics teams and/or community recreational programs. With a strong alumni base, community partnerships locally and abroad, geographical location on a major international border close to major North American markets, and a research and industry-active faculty, students have ample opportunities to learn, network, and prepare themselves for their future careers.
