The Sport and Entertainment Management Department at the University of South Carolina prepares undergraduate and graduate students for a variety of positions in the sports and entertainment industry. The University of South Carolina is unique in Sport and Entertainment Business as the first major University to create a separate department for the study of sport and entertainment in a business curriculum. The goal of the faculty and the department is to create an integrated academic learning environment for analyzing and resolving the challenges in the business of sport and entertainment. The faculty and staff are committed to providing support for student achievement. Students can enter the industry with exceptional knowledge, professional preparation, a strong alumni network, and the confidence to assume leadership positions. Sport and Entertainment is a growing sector in the global economy and the opportunity for success is limited only by our imagination.
Bachelor's in Sport and Entertainment Management - Campus

When considering this major, students should view the Sport and Entertainment industries from a "business" perspective. Our curriculum is a business oriented degree tailored to meet the specific conditions and demands of the Sport and Entertainment industries. We do not produce coaches, physical education teachers, exercise science specialists, massage therapists or sports medicine practitioners - though these are indeed important professions.

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Entertainment Management combines studies in the liberal arts with studies in business, accounting, marketing, economics, finance, information management and sport and entertainment management. A minimum of 127 credit hours is required to complete the degree.

Master's in Sport and Entertainment Management - Campus

The Master of Science in Sport and Entertainment Management (MSEM) is designed to train students for management and leadership roles in the sport, entertainment and venue industries.

Recent graduates of the program are employed in a variety of positions across the United States and abroad.  Our graduates currently work in the following industries: professional sports (21%), venues (18%), college athletics (18%), non-sport business (14%), live entertainment (11%), higher education (10%), and other sport and entertainment industry types (8%).

Most students complete the 36 credit hour MSEM curriculum over the course of four semesters.  Summer courses are available and may be used to shorten the time in the MSEM program.

Doctorate in Sport and Entertainment Management - Campus

Located in the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management (HRSM), the new Sport and Entertainment doctoral program offers a wide range of expertise in the sport and entertainment industry and is the only program in the United States that provides doctoral students with an exposure to sport and other forms of entertainment, such as music, live performances, theater, dance and arts . The SPTE department has one of the largest faculties in sport and entertainment management in the world, with 12 tenured (-track) faculty members, who are able to mentor doctoral students and prepare them for an academic career. The faculty has won numerous research awards, and has among them Research Fellows of the North American Society of Sport Management and the Sport and Recreation Law Association. Publications of faculty have appeared in notable journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Sport Management, Journal of Business Ethnics, Sport Management Review, Sport Marketing Quarterly, European Sport Management Quarterly, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, Ethnic and Racial Studies and Tourism Analysis among others.

A doctoral student in the SPTE program will be perfectly situated to start building their academic network from the first day in the program, as our department organizes two national conferences each year. During November, it hosts the Sport Entertainment and Venues Tomorrow (SEVT) conference, designed to bring the industry and academics together (http://www.sevt.org), and in April it hosts the College Sport Research Institute Conference  (http://csriconference.org). SPTE is also home to the College Sport Research Institute, host of the annual CSRI conference and publisher of the annual report on Adjusted Graduation Gaps among NCAA Division-I football programs. Finally, the SPTE program publishes the Sport and Entertainment Review, a peer-reviewed journal published in partnership with FiT Publishing that accepts submissions focused both on sport and entertainment.  All these research oriented activities will allow our PhD students to be at the epicenter of new developments in the field of sport and entertainment management and give them maximum exposure to a strong network of both academics and practitioners during their training.
