Anthony Morrison, who works in events operations for the Philadelphia Phillies, spent his first year at Temple undecided about his major and uncertain what he wanted from college. “The Phillies were closing in on financing the new Citizens Bank Park,” he says, “I remembered that Temple had a sport and recreation management major and I decided to go for it.” Tough classes provided real-world training, valuable connections and plenty of support. “It surprised me how much the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management professors cared about students. I was more than a number. Plus, there was a huge number of resources available to everyone.” Anthony’s internship search began at a Temple Networking Seminar, where he spotted a representative from the Phillies. When the representative developed a cough, Anthony sprang for a bottle of water – and offered it with his resume. “The rest,” he says, “is history.” Two weeks later, Anthony reported for work at Citizens Bank Park – the ballpark of his dreams. “I did anything and everything asked of me,” he says. “I arrived early and stayed late. I helped the grounds crew, answered phones, and put in time with the game-day staff. I wanted people to remember me for all the right reasons.” After graduating, Anthony joined the Phillies staff full time. By his fifth year, he helped to manage 700 game-day employees, oversaw parking operations, and managed the police detail inside and outside the ballpark, not to mention fan correspondence and customer service. But what excites him most remains Citizens Bank Park. “We can’t control whether we win or lose, but we can try our hardest to create a world-class experience that will have people coming back time and time again. “It was my dream to work for a hometown team,” he says. “But I owe my career to Temple and the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.”
